At each visit, you will complete a safety screening with a research assistant and our MRI technician to ensure it is safe for you to enter the MRI environment. It is important to note that the magnet is always on, meaning that small pieces of metal can become projectiles.
Yes, fMRI is a safe procedure. It is non-invasive and does not involve exposure to radiation. However, because it uses a strong magnetic field, it is not suitable for people with certain implants like pacemakers or cochlear implants.
During an fMRI scan, you will be asked to lie still on a sliding bed that goes into a large tunnel-like tube. You will be asked to remain as still as possible. You will hear a series of beeps that the MRI makes during scanning and are required to wear earplugs. The scan is painless and takes 15 to 60 minutes depending on the session.
We ask that you provide 48 hours notice if you are unable to make your MRI session. Scanning costs $800+ per participant and we are required to pay for missed sessions. The more time we have to reschedule, the better.
You can withdraw from the study at any time. We understand that circumstances change and sometimes you are no longer able to participate. However, due to the expense and time it takes to run a study of this complexity, we ask that you do not sign up if you do not intend to complete all sessions.
The MRI environment is loud so earplugs are provided. You will also have headphones on to communicate with the research team in the next room. We monitor your movement, heart rate, and respiration rate. Your main job in the scanner is to stay as still as possible.
Yes, TMS is safe. It is non-invasive and the effects are temporary. You will be asked to complete a safety screening beforehand, as it may not be suitable for individuals who have experienced head trauma or have a history of seizures.
TMS may feel like a flick to the scalp, but for many people, they don't feel anything from TMS. TMS generally does not hurt at all, and we will do our utmost to make sure you are comfortable throughout the experience.
No, there is no evidence for lasting effects of a single TMS trial, which is what you will experience in the study.
Yes, participants are compensated $20/hr for participation. You will receive cash payment at the end of each session. Participants who complete all three sessions will receive a $40 bonus and be entered into a raffle for a prize valued at $200.
Yes, a parking pass is provided for each visit if needed. Please let the researcher know that one is required and we will have it ready for you when you arrive. Parking spaces are located on the west side of the building (enter via Canlan or Shoreham lot).
